- Being a Teacher - Industrial Finance (and a HAMSTER)

Just before i started to pen down this post, I looked into the dictionary to confirm the meaning of "hamster". You'll know why.
Teaching, be it at any intellectual level, is nothing short of a major challenge. I wonder why society banishes this profession so ruthlessly saying, "Those who're unable to perform in any field, take to teaching."

This stark realisation dawned upon me, not while lecturing the B.E. class 07-08 on Industrial Finance, but while I was sitting with my 4 year old niece, Esha, helping her out with her puzzle game.
The game had two-piece puzzles; on one was a word and on its fit was the picture representing that word. It was all good for about a couple of minutes; Esha picking a pic-piece, and I giving her word pieces to check the fit, trying my best to make her get the idea of word form.
All of a sudden I came upon a word piece that read "Hamster". I do not feel ashamed to admit that I had never come across that word till then. But it made me realise how far away I am from being adept at teaching, for that matter, even a 4 year old.
And the hamster piece was naturally one of the last few puzzles we solved. I recall the "match the column" exercises in which I used this tactic for elements did not know about. Keep solving till you have one remaining in each.

Finally, this is what a hamster turns out to be:

The dictionary says: short-tailed mouselike rodent often kept as a pet.

This petite, cute creature taught me that when it comes to knowing one's world, I'm no bigger than it is; certainly not more noticeable than......... a drop in an OCEAN.
Indeed, the best way to learn, is by being a TEACHER.

102 - TOW My Training Begins

102 - The One Where My Training Begins

(Music.... Long Frame shot of GEOMETRIC, pan in....Abhijit walking in.... Music....)

My second day started in the least unexpected way.... I had decided that I'd join the company Gym that day, so had packed in soame workout clothes n sport shoes for myself...so me n Vishal had decided that we'd take the Scooty, n store the stuff in its bootspace, but to our dismay...(actually, dis is July)...the scooter was badly punctured....so we were delayed a bit....but we switched to Vishal's bike n scooted off to work...Vishal dropped me off, and I reached just on time....
My schedule was 9.30 to 6.30 training, with a lunch break in between. I thought it was gonna be really hectic n taxing ...especially coz i had a gr8 track record of attending college with similar timings...n trust me, when i did attend, i felt like i was getting tortured...(i hope my profs. dont read this...).
My training in the first week was supposed to be on C++, n i was expecting the usual C++ crap..but the training started from about level 6, n it was like facing 6 bouncers in an over...for the entire duration of the innings....(never dun that b4...). So to give a brief idea (actually i hv Dolphin , not Idea), c++ training was going to be really tough, coz it was a 10 day course crammed into a 5 day time slot... so I knew that we were in for some brainy action in the week ahead...n i would much rather not discuss it any more...
Moving on... one thing i loved there was the free n casual approach n work culture...ppl were in jeans, tshirts..semi-formals...I was looking really overdressed in the lot....with my plain full sleeved shirts, black trousers n black shoes....i decided fm next day, i'll be wearing casuals...
Along with that, i must mention here about the amount of Tea-Coffee every1 drinks out here... n why not..we hv a small Pantry section at virtually every corner inside the building...with tea-coffee machines n a microwave...but the greatest hit among everybody is a Cafe Coffee Day machine..that churns out everything ranging from a Cappuccino to Espresso to Latte , even plain tea or milk.....all that u'd get at a CCD outlet, except the BILL..... so its fair to say, i hv so much caffeine in my system, that i dont shut down till 2.30 am ....n still i dont feel tired...thats really sum hidden strength i discovered....
Since i hv brought up the topic of strength, i'd proceed to the Gym part...We hv an exceptionally well equipped and well maintained gym on our premises...along wid a nice swimming pool and a tennis courtas i said earlier..i had planned to start gym that day, n for the first time, i actually did what i had planned.... i changed and went in the gym....enrolled myself...spoke to the trainer abt my gym history....n then started my workout with some warmup, Cardio, and sum basic weights....about an hour in the gym made me feel good...refreshed n ready for action.....
But unfortunately, the only action left was to Go home , hv dinner n sleep...which i did with all my gusto.....
Once again, feeling that i hv achieved something....feeling that i hv put the time in my life to some good use...i retired to bed....waiting for a fresh new day tmrw......

More updates cmg up in my next episode....103....stay tuned..

101 - TOA My First Day

101 - The One About My First Day...

(Before u start, i would like to mention that this is a hybrid post between F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and Scrubs, title is like the former, while i m visualizing myself as if i m narrating this in a Voiceover, just like J.D. of Scrubs...)

Monday, 23rd July, 2007, a major landmark in my life.... its my first day of professional life...I joined GEOMETRIC SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS LTD.......... (dont get surprised...i was supposed to join TCS on 8th Aug, but this offer came up n was difficult to say 'no' to...)..Many of my friends know i always wanted to join GSSL... n so, there I was, being a part of my dream company as a fresher......
My first day was quite an experience in itself....I was required to report @ the Agra Fort Bldg..(yea, these ppl @ Geometric hv got strange nomenclature...gets even bizarre ahead...) at 9.30 am. After signing in at the reception, I waited for the recruitment manager to show up. The receptionist informed him abt my arrival, and I was asked to wait. After about half an hour, i was called in , and I recieved my Offer Letter with salary details. Immediately, I was shown the way to the auditorium, where, I was told, the Induction was going on... when I reached there, a lady then took me to another room, where actually the Induction was being held....n guess the name of the room....Takshashila....lol....(told u...bizarre). I was handed a huge bunch of forms to be filled, which i started to do wearily.. Passport Details form, PF form, PF nomination form, PF declaration, Insurance Form, Declaration, LTA n Food Coupons declarations n related forms, n what not.....all the while, the HR ppl were helping us with these forms, n clearing our doubts...
The form filling session was followed by various presentations...first up was the Organization Overview n Compensation structure clarification.... that was followed by the Infosystems Security rules n procedures ppt... which also included the use n rules of use of email id n related process.... the security presentation was very important as it stressed on the Dos n Don'ts, n also on the importance of Confidentiality.
After that, we were taken for lunch in the company canteen. A table had been arranged nicely for all us Joinees, and the food was also quite delectable. We all ate pretty quickly, in anticipation of the post lunch session, which was to begin @ 1400 hrs.
After lunch, we were educated about our payroll and all related areas, including how to maximize the Take-home salary... This session was followed by the opening of the Bank Accounts...here, representatives from 3 banks (CITIBank, ICICI n HDFC) entered the room n started boasting about their respective banks' offerings and other crap.... i was least interested to listen to all that, coz Vishal had strongly recommended HDFC...so i went in for an HDFC bank acct...now all the ppl who knw how a bank account is opened in nationalized banks, prepare to get amazed.... gone r the days of lengthy forms, signatures n tireless waiting for the account to get opened... all it takes now is a couple of signatures , a photograph, an id, n ur instant bank account is ready..(faster than u can cook Maggi...)..all complete wid ur ATM-Debit card, netbanking pin n cheque book...call it 2 min. account....
After that, again the boring presentations resumed.. with a wide gamut of topics covering the facilities layout, HR instructions, Admin instructions...n such other stuff....
At the end of the day, we got our Access Cards, sans our Ids...only blank access cards...we were told we'll recieve our ids in a week's time...after thaa, all our forms n documents were collected, and we were collected and we were asked to report to our immediate Managers... I wasnt assigned any, but i got a copy of my schedule of the week.....i had to begin C++ training the next day....so i went to chk out the training room on 2nd floor.... (only so that i could use my new Access card...).... Having checked out the room, and used my Card at every possible opportunity n more, i decided it was time to leave... so i went out to where my scooty was parked..(yes..i had ridden Minal's scooty that day..), where there was a customary bag checking..n left for home...beaming with pride on the inside....looking forward to the next morning...
More about my first week at work in my future posts.....

Something known as Feed Aggregators

Hello, I didn't have much to write on the SPCE Mech blog here, so i decided to let u know an easier way of reading peoples blogs and sites which provide web feeds. Now what is this "Web Feed" ?
According to Wikipedia:

A web feed is a data format used for serving users frequently updated content. Content distributors syndicate a web feed, thereby allowing users to subscribe to it. Making a collection of web feeds accessible in one spot is known as aggregation, which is performed by an Internet aggregator.
Now, which aggregator do I suggest you to use? Well, I use Google Reader, its made on AJAX platform, which is an extension of Java, aah, forget the platform and all, heres how it works:
  • Point your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, etc.) to http://reader.google.com
  • Login with your Gmail account (yes the one which you use for email, same password which you enter while checking email). Do not worry about your password, the service is by Google, and you are not giving out your password to any third party by accessing this service. When you login (and already have some Feeds addresses added, it will look like this:
  • Now hows do you add Feed addesses? Here are 3 steps you follow to add feed and manage Google Reader.
  • To find feeds on websites or blogs, you need to look for this button on the site, besides that is the link, right click on that link and copy it. Add it in Google Reader and you are done, now when ever some one posts on the blog or site, it can be read on Reader.
  • Why to use this? well it saves time by not making you to access each blog or site to read the latest post. Its just like checking email, so whenever you login to check email, you can also catch up with the latest on your favourite blog!
  • Its based on AJAX platform as I told, which means it takes very less time to load, so stuff is checked in a jiffy!
So start using Google Reader and enjoy reading! ( If u happen to use it, do add my blog also!)

Siemens, cookies and damsels!

The first week at Siemens was pretty good. I didnt really expect it to be so much fun. Everything at Siemens is so god damn lavish. The plush convention centre where we spent our days, the wooden ceiling (yes, wooden), the pretty canteen, the beautiful enviorn, did I mention the wooden ceiling?

Now, this is not my first time visit to a corporate office. I have been to Schlumberger's office and while it was pretty, it wasnt anything like Siemens.

We joined on Monday. We were asked to sign our names at the security centre. The security centre is wired and always has hip-hop songs playing.(Pretty cool, u wud think..Wait till u see the guard gyrate to the beats)

We were then asked to assemble at the convention centre. We were alloted table nos. At the tables we saw placards with our names inscribed on it.

I searched for "Arshat Chaudhary".

A rose was placed on the table along with a welcome message and a leather bag.

The hall was dressed in white! White tables, white chairs, white curtains...There was a big screen projector on the wall. There were two 43' LCD displays positioned halfway through the hall. The hall could seat more than 160 people!

Monday and Tuesday were spent attending lectures and getting a feel of the things around us.

On Wednesday, we visited the Kalwa factory which is actually situated near Airoli. This day was the only day I got really tired. But you might expect tht when you have to tour factories (five in no.) spread over 50000 sq mts of land.

Mine is a new factory, and its so new tht you can smell the paint! Most of the eqiupment was shipped from Germany. The doors are imported from Dubai and they open vertically (Like they show in sci-fi movies).
The storage area is airconditioned and its so large tht a 6 storeyed building would stand there! The shop floor is air pressurised. The girl:boy ratio was 1:137 when the reports last came in. There are 138 employees out of which only the receptionist is female!(subject to change without prior notice)
The project is top secret so I cant revel much data.

Thursday and Friday were real fun. We had settled down by then. All we did is sit on the last row and crack jokes all day long. Komel would come up would one good joke and 19 bad jokes every fifteen minutes. Abhijit should be proud!
I gotta learn a lot from Komel. Quite philosophical he is! Among all tht philosophy its good to have Akshay's cool attitude around.

I loved the breaks we got. The tea break being my fav, not coz of the tea but becoz they used to serve mouth watering cookies! We must have had atleast 12 different types of cookies - choclate chips, tuti-frooti, cocoa cookies etc. (And all tht free of charge! Mouth watering or what!)

Now the most imp question the mech guys must be dying to ask! "Were there any girls?" Lots! LOTS! Its been ages since we have been with with so many XX chromosomes in
one room. At all times (esp. during lectures) we had an option of admiring any of the 3 pretty HR ladies who were almost always present in the hall.

We had both western and southern zone GTEs at worli. And since I have always had a weakness for Tamil girls, this place was to me what Lords is to Ganguly.
http://www.telegraphindia.com/1061208/images/08sou.jpg
I was really smitten by this dusky damsel. But the loser tht I am, cudnt gather the courage to talk to her.

Saturday was an outbound training to Silent hills resort , Palgher. More on tht later. Will keep you wonderful people posted as Siemens happens.

IndusHtrial PHinaance !!

Greetings all.
Whether it's going to be tough time for the current B.E. Mech. class, or a smooth sail through, they themselves are to decide, like we did.

One special interaction they're surely going to have is with the new lecturer appointed by Dr. Bhonsale (our respected HoD.) for Industrial Finance. It was supposed to be taught by some Prof. Kutty from S.P. Jain, but now the baton has been handed over to a madcap known by the name of............. MAULIK D. MAVANI !!!!!
En route to my preparation for GATE 2008, (if that's a sudden revelation to you, dear reader, please absorb it with all kindness) I've been visiting college daily, to follow up on college matters, and for CATIA. I thought I'd sharpen my general skills a bit by taking up some lectureship stilt. (If anybody's trying to figure out the connection between GATE, CATIA and I.F., don't; I haven't tried deliberately either.)
Initially, I was a bit miffed when I came to know that I.F. was already taken by this gentleman, as I wanted to deal with it (one of my fav's). Yesterday, when I was at college, Sachin Navalkar came running up to me and asked me, "Did you meet Bhonsale sir?"
I said, "No, why?"
He said, "Prof. Kutty, for IF, can come only on Thursdays, so he's decided not to take it."
I sprang up saying, "Okayyyyy...!! I'm ready."
Like a kid escorting the teacher, he picked up my oldy type Chhaataa, and started walking... (lol!! the way he did it was funny.)
Then I had a long meeting with Dr. Bhonsale, and decided the course of action.
(The payment details aren't disclosed yet....anyway, who's going for it.....)
So, this is it for now. My lectures will be held twice a week.
Mon: 2 pm to 3 pm.( oh my God !! sleeping time.)
Thu: 10 am to 11am.
(Abhijeet Despo scraps me last night: "sure man....cya ... byee...tc...happy teaching.. n remember, u were at the receiving end of profs no more than 3 months back...so give the kids a break, ok???".......LOL...!!)
SPCE Mechanical ki........ JAIIIIIIII....!!!

Of pamplets, kakas and Aroop!

The main reason this blog started was coz we wanted people to share their experiences.Read about the The Idea Here.

This is one experiences that I wanna share with you.

I know tht some of the readers here know about my plan about the classes I wanted to start. Go to www.topyourclass.co.nr for further details.

As you might know, one of the best method of advertising is through pamplets. So we decided to print some (800 copies) for our classes.

Once these copies were ready we had to distribute them to prospective students. This is where the fun starts. I and my cousin, Aroop, decided tht we choose K.J.Somaiya coll of engg. as the distribution site.

There was no security at the coll gate, so I went about my business, distributing pamplets to any kid with a hint of facial hair. In my entusiasm I forgot tht I was standing within the campus. Aroop, the law abiding citizen tht he is, was standing outside the gate, distributing pamplets.

All of a sudden, a kaka type guy (uniformed security) comes from god knows where and catches hold of the bag in which I had kept the pamplets.
http://www.expertsgroup.co.in/images/guardingservices.jpg

kaka: Chalo, saab bulata hai.
Me: (realising tht kaka is surely marathi) Kaka pun zala kay?
kaka: te saheb tula saangtil...

Me
: Alfa to Aroop..Alfa to Aroop...We have a Broken Arrow! Alfa is down! Alfa is down! This is not a drill! I repeat! This is not a drill!

Aroop came running. Aroop has a way with marathi kaka type guys.He has done his schooling from King george dadar(Sukhi's school). They give special training there.

But this time his charm didnt work. We were asked to sit near the security's cabin.

Kaka: Saab busy hai.
Aroop(to me):Tu tension mat le! BMC aur police mein apun ka bahut pechan hai(this was the King george in him talking)
I felt better after he said tht.

After 10 mins we got bored and started talking about our joining date, movies etc.

There was a bigger(in size and post) kaka who I thought was hinting at some chai pani.

Me:Bigger kaka, kahi tari kara na tumhi!!
Bigger kaka: Ata me kay karnar?? Tumchi pavti (receipt) fadnaar mothe saheb. Je karnar te saaheb karnar

What? there is an even bigger kaka?

After 5 more mins every body got bored but Aroop looked amazingly cool. He was like his father owned somaiya's. It was like it wasnt somaiya's but chaudhary's.

The original Kaka: Sahebaana thoda chaha-paani dya.
Aroop: Kay kaka? aamcha kade swatah nokri nahi!! aamhi kay denaar?

For the record, Aroop is placed in Infosys. And I am placed in Siemens.

Still, we gave him 50 bucks and got out of there.

Was a lot of fun!! We felt like we were a bunch of 22 yr olds(coz thts wht we are...)

One gyaan Aroop gave me was-No matter what happens, confidence lose nahi karne ka!
Point noted mate!

Deadly Colour !!

With daily visits to college, i noticed that the benches were refurnished with a decent grey look. But for those who don't know, the deadly pink has joined it to make the killing combo.
I wonder...who on earth found that colour worth a mech class room.
And if it's been selected in consultation with colour therapy experts, i bet our maananiya Govinda ji would make a better one!
Anyway, hope our future (academic) generations manage to keep our dear class rooms as beautiful as they can be.
Cheers!!!

Drug Life !!

I know drug addiction is commonplace in our age-group. Yet, being aware about it, and witnessing it are two totally different aspects.
This came to me on the 11th of July, '07, as I was parking my car in the parking lot common to SPCE students. At the corner, near the small chamber built, this group of boys, possibly from Bhavan's college, were making SUTTA of some powder they had. I was going to college for the CATIA class; decided to leave them to their misery.
2 hours later when i returned, they were still there....... in that same misery, smoking their lives out as though there would be no tomorrow. Two of them were literally sparring over one last puff.
Not that these kids were victims of circumstance; kids from rich families (i know they're more into this).
Something even more disturbing was that they were in possession of a white Indica Taxi (with an all India permit), whose number I did note down, but didn't know what do do with it; since i'm unaware of drug-trade scrutinising laws.
These occurrences make me feel so bloody helpless.... something like a small boat is wrecked with the young sailors drowning; gasping for dear breath, before they're embraced by mighty death; and I, safe on the pier, watching them being tossed around till they succumb.
My mother sighed in relief when I said I didn't do anything...
"Maulik, refrain from this militant reformist attitude; first come to power and then try improving the world....what if you'd tried stopping them; they had drugs; they'd also be keeping guns and knives."
Where....when does one hold the power to save these kids....to make reforms that'd bring back the glory of pre-colonial India?
A.P.J. Kalam (Sir) repeatedly stresses on the importance of education(I don't mean literacy) and harnessing youth power to propel the nation towards glories like energy-independence by 2020, AIDS eradication..... The youth progresses...it progresses uniformly. We can't afford to have such extremes of conditions....at one end, extremes of intelligence, polish, goodness, growth, optimism....and on the other, extremes of negativity, destruction.
Where do we make those at the ends unite, and harness the power of unison?

Greetings, all !!

It's been longer than a week since I first signed up to join the Blogo bandwagon. Here I am, making a maiden juvenile attempt, fluttering my wings in these intriguing skies.
LOL...! So very typically complicated. I know I've irritated you all, countlessly, by this very habit.
I'll try to frame it in the simplest form I can.
I feel happy when I read all your posts; varied in description, with a pinch of humour in each one of them, mostly describing the first days at work.... and i can't but help saying, "Sab bacche baday ho gaye yaar !!"
Hmmmm.. as far as work(job) is concerned, I have received many congratulations on my receiving the Army call, and many more astonished (possibly irritated and angry) reactions to my rejecting the call.
With all my heart, i thank you all for the loving concern showed. It actually felt like I have a huge 80 strong family scrutinising my decisions. But this isn't any childish complacency on my part.
Quite often, what happens is that (please try your best to get this analogy right) when a person ship-wrecked is lost in the vast seas, and has countless routes to choose, he tends to cling to the nearest buoy, and plot his strategy. But the final aim is the same, getting to the target island.
Similarly, with this kidaa in my mind to do something radical for India(Bharat), I have many avenues open.... with Army Engg. as the closest (buoy) to cling to. But I always knew that there's a much greater scope of executing my attack through different routes.
More important is the fact that it was your company, our B.E. Mechanical class of 2006-2007 that instilled in me, this faith and the confidence in my abilities to make it big...(okay, no ambiguities in the closing sequence). And I know that i shall excel.
Once again, a heartfelt thanks to you all, the B.E. Mech family for keeping me.
For more posts....later.
God bless all. Jai Hind.

L&T: Day One - Lunch & Tea

The day started with I missing the bus bcuz i woke up late (Gosh......how will I manage to wake so early everyday?...)!
I couldn't believe I'll be late on the very First day! But thank god.... it was exact 8.30am when i reached gate 5...so I was on time...but was it really necessary?

all the GET (Graduate Engg Trainees) were gathered in the auditorium.... everyone filled with the excitement!

We were asked to fill a form except 3 we have already filled!
We did it happily not knowing whats ahead.....

Then came the First Tea Break!

We had some snacks n tea...n again occupied our seats.....
The document verification started at around 9.30am and went till 12 noon....
What we were supposed to do during the time? - seat on ur place.. and do TP!
Everyone was hungry by the time verification ended!

So we had Lunch Break!
The lunch was gud (all those who had been eating in mess will agree wid me :) )

Hoping the process will finish by 3 o clock.. we again occupied our seats...
this time the excitement was all gone..and the atmosphere was as gud as college auditorium.. just before any function.Everyone was chitchatting and cracking jokes as we do in college...with no limits literally! ;)

Then came a big blow that faded all our hopes... we were asked to fill 3 more forms and an Icard...

I was literally bored of writing my name and address again and again....
Why does a firm require the same info so many times?????

All done...forms submitted and we were told to wait till we get our I cards back...

This was the Second Official Tea Break!
we waited...
we waited...
we waited...
and
we waited!

So bored of waiting, we ourself declared our Third but Unofficial Tea break!
I got the feeling that i have beaten my own time record... of sitting in an auditorium.... I dont think I have spent so much time in coll auditorium...even after summing up all 4 yrs!...
We have been there for almost 8 hours!

Finally the day ended with a relief - we got all those docs done! :)
and A geat news...that...
We have a Holiday tomorrow! :)

So this was our first day at L&T : A Lunch & Tea Day! ;)
I will say... L&T has kept its promise..... ;)

(P.S. This was our first test - A test of patience....;)... but i nJoyed it a lot! :)

A Graduate Will Remember

As the doors opened
We all ushered in-
Scared, unsure
A sense of eagerness within.

Our lives once separate
Had converged into one;
We'd all be with each other
Until the day we'd be done.

The journey started off easy
Laughing and having fun,
Maths I, and Mechanics
We'd only just begun.

Sophomores already!
Brand new challenges to face;
Harder schedules with a hall upstairs
Losing and adding some classmates.

Third year arrived,
Marking the second half of the long haul.
Card greetings and the expectations of a rose
Bringing much excitement to all.

Step-Up Day- Another turning point
Wow- It is here at long last!
The newest seniors wonder
Where the years went so fast!

Seniors experience...

Time whirling on
As do the hands of a clock
Not even the strongest or most powerful
Could ever make it stop.

I process up the aisle,
Wistfully wiping tears from my eyes
Must we leave after four short years?
For some of us, it's been three.

We leave behind a legacy
Like no other class before
And we, the Sunshines of 2007
Know that there is much more in store

Though like the sea we may part
I beg of you to try
Hold the memories close in heart
As we simply say "good-bye."

By:Holly Elizabeth Thoede, with a few modifications by me.

MBA....

Who is Smarter than the Smartest

Once four MBA students were boozing till late night and didn't study
for the test which was scheduled for the next day. In the morning
they thought of a plan. They made themselves look as dirty and weird
as they could with grease and dirt. Then they went up to the dean
and said that they had gone to a wedding last night and on their
return the tyre of their car burst and they had to push the car all
the way back and that they were in no condition to appear for the
test. The Dean was a just person so he said that you can have a
retest after three days. They said they were ready.

On the third day they appeared before the dean. The Dean said that
as this was a special condition all four were required to be in
separate rooms for the test. They all agreed as they had prepared
well in last three days.

The test consisted of two question with a total marks of 100.

Q1. Write down your Names. (2 marks)

Q2. Which tyre burst ? (98 marks)

P.S.: Don't bother commenting that this was a copy-paste activity... I admit that... but it was worth sharing.....
